Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at UCSB, room 1414
Two campus leaders in environmental science, Dr. Frank Davis and Dr. Peter Alagona, speak about their research at the reserves; a poster session and a wine reception in the Bren School Courtyard.
Dr. Davis is Director of the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS) and Professor of Landscape Ecology and Conservation Planning at the Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, where heads the Biogeography Lab.
Dr. Frank Davis: Highlights from a half century of oak research in the UC Natural Reserve System
Oak woodlands are the signature ecosystems of California. Since 1965, research at UC Natural Reserves has yielded many key insights into California oak woodland ecology, restoration and management.
Peter S. Alagona is an associate professor history, geography, and environmental studies at UC Santa Barbara. He is an environmental historian and historian of science whose work focuses on land use, wildlife management, environmental politics, and ecological science in California and the American West---as well as the broader history of ideas about environmental change.
Dr. Peter Alagona: There and Back Again: The Past, Present and Future Histories of the UC Natural Reserve System.
Today, in an era of global change, historical data is more important than ever in the environmental sciences. How ell have we done in preserving our past for the sake of our future? And what are we doing now to capture vital historical information before it disappears forever?
